Water heater maintenance & scale flushing

Bucks County water is hard. Calcium and lime settle to the bottom of the tank as scale, which insulates the burner or element from the water. That means longer run times, higher bills, popping and rumbling noises, and a tank that can fail years early. An annual flush with our Sediment Buster tool is the single best thing you can do for a water heater.

What hard water really does to your tank

These are real photos from tanks we've cut open and serviced — this is exactly what an annual Sediment Buster flush prevents.

How we flush your unit

  1. Shut off power or gas and let the tank cool.
  2. Connect our Sediment Buster flush tool to the drain valve and run it to a floor drain or bucket.
  3. Open a hot tap upstairs, then drain the tank until the water runs clear.
  4. Use the Sediment Buster to short-burst the cold supply and stir up settled scale for a deeper flush.
  5. Inspect and replace the anode rod if it's more than 50% consumed.
  6. Test the T&P relief valve, refill, purge air, and relight/restore power.

Why it matters

  • Cuts water-heating energy use — scale can waste up to 25% of the fuel you burn
  • Adds years of life to the tank and prevents premature leaks
  • Stops the popping and rumbling caused by trapped steam under sediment
  • Keeps rust and grit out of your hot water lines and fixtures
  • Protects your manufacturer warranty, which usually requires annual service

We recommend a flush once a year — twice if you're on a well or have very hard water. Platinum ComfortShield Club members get their annual water heater flush included; Silver and Gold members receive it at a reduced member price.
